A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check is provided through the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and as accredited agencies we review and submit your application to the ACIC. This police check will check an applicant’s name against a national Persons of Interest database. An Australian Federal Police (AFP) Check, is slightly different. The AFP provides National Police Checks for certain applications.

The responsibility of deciding what is deemed ‘relevant’ for a job application is at the discretion of the employer. Without a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, sometimes referred to as a police check, you may not satisfy the requirements for your job application.

In Australia it is illegal to discriminate against someone applying for a job based on their criminal record, unless that criminal record directly relates and/or is relevant to the job. Step 1 Start your application – You will need to complete the on-line application and informed consent form. 

Step 2 Verify your identity – You will need to provide proof of identity documents and we will need to verify your identity to ensure no one else is submitting a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check application without your consent.

Step 3 Enter your information and submit – Your Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check application will be lodged into the ACIC system only when all the information you have provided meets the requirements of the ACIC. You may be asked to provide additional documentation, or information before the application can be submitted. This is a requirement of the ACIC. Once the application has been submitted onto the ACIC’s NPCS systems, the relevant policy agency, or agencies, will assess any recorded information and determine whether or not it can be released based on relevant spent convictions legislation.

Step 4 Your results are emailed to you when your Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check result has been completed by the relevant police agencies and returned to us.

We forward your personal information and supporting documentation to the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC)

Your will need to provide 5 identity documents from three categories of identity documents: 

• one commencement of identity document
• one primary use in the community document
• two secondary use in the community documents
• one self-captured photo

These are mandatory requirements before any application can be submitted to the ACIC to begin the police checking process.

There is no standard timeframe, it is a snapshot of information at a point in time and therefore there is no expiry date. Organisations may request a copy of your Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check result from the ACIC that has been provided within a prescribed period, and no later.
